Brexit latest: Rishi Sunak promises to walk away with no deal if EU refuses to compromise | Politics | News

Despite the economic turmoil caused by the pandemic, Mr Sunak claimed the UK is ready to walk away from negotiations if a good deal cannot be agreed. Ahead of his Comprehensive Spending Review next week, the Chancellor also claimed the UK will not be bullied into a bad deal despite the impacts of the virus. The Chancellor warned if the two sides fail to agree a deal, it will be due to the EU’s failure to compromise.

With the EU stating, UK officials had failed to compromise on the main areas of divergence, Mr Sunak insisted Brussels has not realised Britain’s newfound sovereignty.

He said: “The major impact on our economy is the coronavirus.

“It’s absolutely not a question of doing a deal at any price. If we don’t get a deal, why is that?

“It is because they are refusing to compromise on what are some completely reasonable and very transparent principles that we’ve laid out from the beginning.

“We are not asking for super-special treatment.”

Despite his warning, the Chancellor did admit his hope a deal will be agreed.

The two sides will continue talks next week ahead of a deadline on November 30.

EU officials have claimed an agreement is 95 percent complete, although the issue of fisheries, state aid and the dispute mechanism still remain.

8.17am update: UK praised for approach to Canada deal

On Saturday, it was announced the UK and Canada will roll over the  Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

The two sides will, however, be able to negotiate a new deal in 2021.

This policy was praised by commentator and expert, Dr Anna Jerzewska, who said: “I like this approach – sign a continuity deal and commit to negotiating a proper one later on.

“Allows you to maintain some sort of continuity but acknowledges that the EU deal is not necessarily fit for purpose for the UK-Canada trade relationship.

“More importantly, this removes the Jan deadline for negotiating a proper FTA. Until you do, the roll-over applies.

“Meaning parties have more time to ensure the new deal is exactly what they want it to be.”

7.38am update: EU “would damage” us – Sir John Redwood

Ahead of a crunch week for Brexit talks, Tory MP for Wokingham, Sir John Redwood claimed the UK need an ambitious plan for growth in Rishi Sunak’s Comprehensive Spending Review.

He said: “This week we need a bold plan for prosperity and growth.

“More tax rises and 600 pages of possible legal text from the EU would damage us more and hold us back.

“Let’s cut taxes and invest in a great independent future.”

7.21am update: “We won’t take a deal at any price”

Rishi Sunak has insisted the UK will not be bullied into any deal with the EU.

The Chancellor also claimed any failure to agree a deal was down to Brussels’ refusal to compromise on key issues.

With the talks running out of time, he also insisted the UK is still prepared to walk away from talks.

He told The Sunday Times: “The major impact on our economy is the coronavirus. It’s absolutely not a question of doing a deal at any price.

“If we don’t get a deal, why is that?

“It is because they are refusing to compromise on what are some completely reasonable and very transparent principles that we’ve laid out from the beginning.

“We are not asking for super-special treatment.”
