Granit Xhaka has added to the problems of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta by being sent off in the Premier League match against Burnley on Sunday. Xhaka was involved in an angry altercation with Burnley players and received a straight red card after grabbing Ashley Westwood around the neck. Xhaka was initially booked for a foul on Burnley winger Dwight McNeil.
McNeil took an exception to Xhaka’s challenge and confronted the Switzerland international.
Arsenal and Burnley players attempted to break the situation up, which resulted in Xhaka falling to the floor.
When he got back to his feet, Xhaka grabbed Westwood which caused the midfielder to fall down.
The score was 0-0 at the time in a must-win match for Arteta’s Arsenal side.
The Gunners had won just won of their last seven Premier League matches and lost their last three at home in the competition.
Xhaka has been heavily criticised by Arsenal supporters for his performances this season and this latest indiscretion does not help matters.
The 28-year-old is now set to miss the next three matches in domestic competition.
The Burnley match was the final game in a three-match suspension for winger Nicolas Pepe.
Pepe was sent off in the 0-0 draw at Leeds United in November after a headbutt on Ezgjan Alioski.
