Lionel Messi has revealed the truth behind his messages with Pep Guardiola, ahead of a potential transfer to Manchester City next summer. The Barcelona icon is out of contract in Catalonia at the end of the season and as things stand, he sensationally looks set to leave the club who remain desperate to keep him.
Messi wanted to leave earlier this summer after sending Barcelona chiefs a burofax, outlining his desire to quit the club.
The request was rejected and instead Messi was forced to stay at Barcelona against his will, despite campaigning for the club to honour a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave.
He had the chance to take them to court where a whitewash was predicted but instead, Messi decided he did not want to leave the club on bad terms.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are the two clubs in contention for his services and they remain arguably the only sides in world football besides Real Madrid that could afford to pay a transfer fee to sign him.
“I don’t know how long my last chat with Pep Guardiola was, but we do talk,” Messi said.
“We don’t talk about whether we are going to meet again. For me Pep is the best, he has something special.”
Messi has never given a direct answer when asked about where he could play should he leave Barcelona.
But now the forward has admitted he would like to embark on an American adventure in the MLS.
He said: “I would like to play in the United States someday, it’s always been one of my dreams… but I don’t know if it will happen!”
Speaking back in February, Guardiola was questioned on the prospect of bringing Messi to the Etihad Stadium.
The Spaniard was quick to dismiss the idea of Messi leaving Barcelona but a lot has changed since then following this summer’s saga.
“He’s a player from Barcelona and he will stay there,” Guardiola said.
“That is my wish, [Messi] staying in Barcelona. I’m not going to talk about players from another club.
“I think he’s going to finish his career there, it’s my wish.”
