Manchester United beat Everton 2-0 in their Carabao Cup quarter-final at Goodison Park on Wednesday night. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a number of changes from Sunday’s emphatic win over Leeds United but Bruno Fernandes remained in the starting XI. Edinson Cavani scored the vital opening goal in the 88th minute before Anthony Martial ended the game as a contest. Express Sport has taken an in-depth look at each of the United players’ performances.
Man United player ratings vs Everton
Dean Henderson – 6
Not a lot to do for Henderson in truth. Everton’s shots on goal were often easy enough for David de Gea’s deputy to deal with.
Came too far for a deep free kick in the first half but no damage was done.
Axel Tuanzebe – 7
Tuanzebe played a more defensive full-back role than Telles on the opposite side.
Good performance from the academy graduate.
Eric Bailly – 6
Bailly did what he had to well as he hopes to push for a first-team spot.
His passing was sometimes off but he was defensively sound and used his pace to get Maguire out of trouble late on following a wayward pass from the captain.
Harry Maguire – 6
Maguire almost put United in trouble after half an hour when he gave possession away to Everton leading-scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Almost gifted a chance to Everton late on but for Bailly to bail him out. Otherwise a relatively solid night for the United skipper.
Alex Telles – 7
Telles got forward a lot down the left-hand side to give United some width, especially in the first half. Defended well as Everton came into the game more.
The Brazilian played a few key passes which led to chances for Solskjaer’s side. Subbed.
Nemanja Matic – 6
A typical Matic performance in the middle of the park.
Solid if unspectacular from the former Chelsea man.
Paul Pogba – 7
Pogba definitely outperformed Van de Beek, although the pair were playing in slightly different positions.
Came more into the game more in the second half and is pushing for a start on Boxing Day. Booked.
Donny van de Beek – 5
Van de Beek didn’t make the best of his rare opportunity to start a match.
Subbed just after the hour mark after failing to make a real impact on the game.
Bruno Fernandes – 7
Nearly everything good from United went through Fernandes in the first half. He will be disappointed after fluffing his lines in trying to set up Cavani in the third minute.
Tailed off in the second half as the number of minutes he has played of late started to catch up with him.
Mason Greenwood – 6
Greenwood went close with a fine header in the first half. Some nice touches from the England international and looked a threat at times. Subbed.
Edinson Cavani – 8
Cavani worked hard and was constantly giving the Everton defenders something to think about. It didn’t fall for the former PSG star in the first half but he came up with the goods eventually.
He latched onto Anthony Martial’s pass, before cutting onto his weaker left foot and firing in the winner in the 88th minute.
