The Reform UK leader told talkRADIO that the Brexit wars within the United Kingdom are over following Boris Johnson agreeing on a post-Brexit free trade agreement with the European Union. Mr Farage added that 11pm on New Year’s Eve marks the end of the great rift the UK has witnessed regarding Brexit.
He said: “I would have much rather gone for no deal, accepted the short-term pain and been freed in every way from everything from these dreadful people in the European Commission.
“But I knew in practical terms that was never going to happen because it would have reopened the split within the Conservative Party.
“The CBI would have gone mad and the Brexit wars would have continued.
“So the good thing about this deal is number one it is not an EU treaty, that is great news.”
Mr Farage continued: “Number two it actually ends the Brexit wars.
“After tonight there is no going back, we the leavers now own the status quo.
“Anyone who stands up now and says we should re-join just gets laughed at.
“So what this settlement does do is let down a couple of groups badly.
“From biosciences to artificial intelligence, and with our world-leading battery and wind technology we will work with partners around the world, not just to tackle climate change but to create the millions of high skilled jobs this country will need not just this year – 2021 – as we bounce back from Covid, but in the years to come.
“This is an amazing moment for this country.
“We have our freedom in our hands and it is up to us to make the most of it.
“And I think it will be the overwhelming instinct of the people of this country to come together as one United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland working together to express our values around the world.”
